THE BEST WAY TO BUY A CAR

Consumers are at such an incredible disadvantage when buying a car. We usually shop for a vehicle every couple years, at best. Yet, the car salesman does it every day, every week and every month, month after month. They are practiced and usually very polished. They know what buying signs to look for and what "hot" buttons trigger you. And worse for you, they know when to go for the close.

Follow these steps to assist you in your car buying experience.

1) Never say you need a specific car: "now, soon, today, tomorrow, or even right away". Do not express that you are in a "rush" to buy.  If they feel you are rushed to buy they probably will be less inclined to negotiate.

2) Do not get too excited about any specific vehicle you see on their lot. If you do, it lets them know more about your hot buttons. Act like you are looking at a stale donut instead, and though that stale donut does not look terribly exciting, it may possibly solve your need.

3) Do not talk monthly payment. That's often the first starting point for a sales person. Negotiate from a standpoint of the vehicle's price, not monthly payment. By negotiating payment you could end up paying alot more money for alot less car.

4) Do not tell them you are trading your current vehicle in.

Two reasons:

         A) they begin to mix the trade in value of your vehicle into the whole monthly payment pitch and it will only confuse how much money you are truly spending,

they often want to see the car to determine it's "trade-in" value, which means you will have to hand over the keys. Without your keys you cannot simply get up a leave as easily as you would have wanted. And that's an old ploy used by car dealerships.

5) Use the internet. Most dealerships have a person who transacts/communicates with "internet" shoppers. Visit the dealership's website and look for a link titled "Internet sales" or something similar.

Imagine how easy it is to request vehicle prices by the internet versus driving from dealership to dealership. Once you arrive at a dealership it often can take hours to narrow down a price from a sales person. Over the internet, that time is trimmed to a few emails.

6) Pre-qualify your auto loan BEFORE you ever step foot on a car lot. We have an account with a credit union. Anytime we buy a car we get pre-approved for a specific dollar amount. That way I know my interest rate and how  much the monthly payment should be at a certain total dollar amount.
